Users Stopping Slimming Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using these treatments need to be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
